Director’s note

With the intention of refusing and avoiding a conventional TV narrative about a middle-aged white male with cancer, I set out to embrace the DIY culture and the punk film-making practice that the technical advances and digital “pocket cinema” have created.

That translated into working intimately with Charlotte Munck, Halfdan Pisket and Dane TS Hawk on a project on a near daily basis for near ten years, which writes directly with a camera, rather than with words. I wanted to tell my story, in such a way that captured decisive moments in time – much as I have done in my observational filmmaking over 2 decades from warzones.

While embracing video diary making to get a cinematically engaging, yet intimate and visceral experience for a viewer, I have sought to create a narrative and a portrait based on time passing, which ended up becoming more of a mosaic than a linear story. Charlotte, Thorsten and Halfdan made this journey passable and the end experience even more textured.

Please also note that regardless of which format of LEGACY you experience - the digital interactive app, the feature film or the cinematic slow show of 10 ½ hrs - do consider them as complementary companion pieces to one another, which can feature simultaneously in a gallery space or other.
